Construction Crew Leader - Home Repair Program

This full-time AmeriCorps service position offers a great opportunity to make a real impact in the lives of others while building your own knowledge and skillset.
AmeriCorps National members serve the community in direct service and capacity building activities.
What will you do?
The construction crew leader plays an integral part in building and repairing homes. Lead groups of skills and unskilled volunteers and homeowner families in construction activities while maintaining a safe, efficient work environment, thus, developing and enhancing your volunteer management and construction skills.
Typically serve Tuesday - Saturday on the build site.
Assist with all aspects of hands-on construction tasks including, but not limited to, demolition, site prep, framing, insulation, drywall, flooring, roofing, finish carpentry and landscaping.
Projects may include new construction, rehabilitation, critical home repair and weatherization projects.
Lead small groups of volunteers and facilitate safe and positive experiences for everyone working on site.
Maintain site safety by adhering to Habitat construction safety policies, modeling best practices and guidelines, volunteer education and site monitoring.
This position will focus on home construction aspects of Habitat affiliate operations.
Where will you serve?
Norfolk is located on the Virginia coast and part of the greater area known as "Hampton Roads." Our region is surrounded by water be it the Atlantic Ocean, several rivers, the Intracoastal Waterway and the Chesapeake Bay. Boating, surfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, deep sea fishing and just about anything else you can do on the water is a big deal here. For local cultural activities, the Chrysler Museum is one of the best-known art museums in the south. We have a growing music scene with festivals including local and national acts performing across all genres. You can also catch a show at one of our many live entertainment venues including the Sandler Center, Harrison Opera House, the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater and Zeiders American Dream Theater.
Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads was founded in 1988. Our mission is to create affordable housing solutions that strengthen families and communities in South Hampton Roads which includes the cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and Suffolk. We have built or rehabilitated more than 240 homes. Within our service area you'll see homes that were built throughout the 20th century with new construction primarily limited to the south.
Our AmeriCorps members serve as Construction Crew Leaders within our repair program. They obtain field experience on construction sites by playing an active role in helping to build and preserve homes. They also increase their leadership skills by engaging and guiding both skilled and unskilled volunteers.
In addition to the standard benefits, Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads provides AmeriCorps members with cell phone expense reimbursement. Habitat vehicles can be used while serving; mileage reimbursement is available for Habitat-related travel in a personal vehicle. Tools are provided during a service year. Benefits of AmeriCorps service
Living allowance $17,000 for approximately 10 months of service.
Segal Education Award of $6,495, upon successful completion of service.

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident at least 18 or older and have a high school diploma or GED.
Knowledge of, and willingness to promote, the mission and activities of Habitat for Humanity International and AmeriCorps.
Ability to work with a diverse group of people.
Strong verbal communication skills.
Experience working with volunteers, teaching or group facilitation.
Experience working as a member of a team.
Basic experience with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and Excel.
